Is Vaping Worse Than Smoking? Here’s the Truth

With more people across Northern Ireland, Ireland, and the UK rethinking their smoking habits, it’s common to wonder – is vaping just as harmful, or even worse, than smoking? Let’s clear up the confusion.

While vaping isn’t completely risk-free, evidence suggests it’s far less harmful than smoking. Switching from cigarettes to vaping significantly reduces exposure to the thousands of toxic chemicals created by burning tobacco.

Why Are Cigarettes So Dangerous?

Traditional cigarettes contain over 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic or known to cause cancer. When you burn tobacco, it produces tar, carbon monoxide, and other dangerous substances that damage the lungs, heart, and blood vessels.

According to the NHS, smoking is a major cause of:

  • Lung, throat, and mouth cancers
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Heart attacks and strokes
  • Reduced life expectancy

In the UK alone, smoking is responsible for around 75,000 deaths every year.

How Vaping Differs from Smoking

Vaping doesn’t involve burning tobacco. Instead, it heats an e-liquid to create vapour, which contains nicotine and flavourings but far fewer harmful substances than cigarette smoke.

Key points:
✅ Vape vapour doesn’t contain tar or carbon monoxide
✅ The absence of combustion makes vaping far safer than smoking
✅ Public health experts agree vaping is a useful harm-reduction tool

Both Public Health England and the NHS have stated that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking – especially for adult smokers looking to quit.

The Problem with Public Perception

Despite clear scientific evidence, many people in Ireland and the UK wrongly believe vaping is just as harmful as smoking.

Research from University College London (UCL), published in JAMA Network Open, revealed that:

  • 57% of smokers in 2023 believed vaping was equally or more harmful than smoking
  • Only 27% recognised it as less harmful
  • Misunderstandings were highest among those under 35

Health experts warn that these misconceptions prevent smokers from making the switch – keeping them exposed to the far higher risks of cigarette smoking.

What Does the NHS Say About Vaping?

The NHS clearly explains:

“Cigarettes release thousands of chemicals when they burn. Many are poisonous, and up to 70 can cause cancer. Most of the harmful substances in tobacco smoke – including tar and carbon monoxide – are not found in vape aerosol.”

The UK Government even plans to give one million smokers free vape starter kits, combined with behavioural support, as part of its national “Swap to Stop” initiative – a strong sign of vaping’s role in helping people quit.
